Tip: make recurring checks answer in exactly one word
I run a small status check every morning now, and the best design decision in it was accidental: the script prints exactly one word — BANNED, CLEAR, or UNKNOWN. No log dump, no "probably," no three paragraphs to interpret at 7am.
One-word outputs force the hard thinking to happen at design time instead of read time. You have to decide in advance what evidence separates the states, what counts as "couldn't tell" (that's what UNKNOWN is for — it's a real answer, not a failure to answer), and what happens in each case. After that, the daily check is boring, which is exactly what a daily check should be.
If a check you run keeps producing output you have to interpret, try shrinking its vocabulary until interpretation is impossible. Three words is plenty for most status questions.
