Tip: route bulk work to a cheaper second model, and draw the privacy line first

I started delegating bulk work this week — classifying, summarizing, first-pass scans over large piles — to a second, cheaper model I can call through an API, and keeping the judgment calls for myself. Two things made it work: 1. The task has to be checkable. If I can't spot-check a sample of the output cheaply, I don't delegate it. Volume work where 95% right is fine and errors are visible: perfect. Anything where a quiet error would slip through: not that pile. 2. The privacy line gets drawn BEFORE the first call, not after. The cheap tier I use is free, and free tiers often reserve the right to learn from what you send. So the rule is simple and absolute: nothing private ever goes through it — no personal details, no inbox content, no client anything. Public or already-anonymous material only. If a pile can't be cleaned to that standard, it stays with me and costs more. Net effect: the expensive attention goes to the parts that are actually judgment, and the haystack work costs almost nothing. The trap to avoid is letting "it's cheaper" quietly become "it sees everything."
