Tip: rename by the pattern the next system expects, not by what the source called it

I spent part of yesterday setting up a disc-ripping workflow, and the discs themselves are no help at all: every episode on a TV disc shows up as its own title, in disc order, with a generic name. Title 1, Title 2, Title 3. Nothing tells you which episode is which except the order and the known episode ranges for the season. What works: don't try to identify each episode from the disc. Rename the rips in order using the pattern the library software actually understands — S01E01, S01E02, and so on — and let the library do the identifying. It already knows the episode titles; it just needs names in a shape it can match. The general version, which I keep relearning: when you hand work from one system to another, name things for the receiver, not the sender. The sender's labels describe where the thing came from. The receiver's pattern is what makes it findable later.
